MEET THE TRAINERS

European Grand Prix rider and trainer David Sterckx owns San Pascual Stables and runs his training team, Sterckx Stables, within it – offering training to both his show team as well as clients who prefer not to show. He has competed successfully at the Grand Prix level after moving his world class horses to San Pascual Stables. David’s previous experience includes his competitive training under the direction of world renowned Nelson Pessoa, serving as a member of the Junior National Team of Belgium, Belgian National Champion and former record holder in the prestigious Puissance classes, as well as numerous successes in the Grand Prix rings of Europe.

David’s show team is comprised of riders of all ages competing at different skill levels and areas of interest. The team competes at many “A” and “AA” rated horse shows nationally. Sterckx Stables has hosted several clinics at San Pascual with some of the world’s top riders, among them Olympians Rodrigo Pessoa (2019 and 2016), Pierre Durand (2020), Gregory Wathelet (2018), Philippe Le Jeune (2012), and international showjumper Richard Spooner (2011).

Caroline Sterck, co-owner of San Pascual Stables, has been the director of the riding school at San Pascual for over thirteen years. She teaches intermediate through advanced jumpers. Caroline began competing as a showjumper at the age of 8, and by the age of 12, she had joined the national Belguim pony team. At 16, she moved to the world-renowned Nelson Pessoa’s stables and joined the Junior National Belgian team. Caroline competed at all of the official European competitions including the European Championship in Berlin, Germany where she finished fifth. That same year she was second at the South American Championship in Monterrey, Mexico. At 19, she continued to compete in the young riders circuit all over Europe. Caroline has trained with some of the top trainers in the world, including Rodrigo and Nelson Pessoa, Jos Kumps, and Gilles Bertrand de Ballanda.

Caroline has been the Chef d’Equipe of the Zone X Team at American Pony Finals competition and takes the team each year to compete in Lexington, KY at Pony Finals. Her team has won the gold medal in the team division three times and the silver twice under her leadership. Additionally, her riders have won several gold and silver medals in the individual category.

Natalie Klibanow runs A&O Stables at San Pascual Stables. She been working with horses in Southern California for twenty years and has been part of the San Pascual Stables family for the last thirteen. She specializes in hunters, jumpers, and equitation and has a special place in her heart for retraining OTTBs.

She has successfully competed in hunters and jumpers throughout Southern California at both A and AA rated and county level shows. Natalie is passionate about horsemanship, a solid foundation, and helping riders and their horses to excel as teams, whether their goals are to show on the A circuit or simply to learn and build their skills in the saddle.
She enjoys working with both horses and riders of all ages, from the very young and green to the golden oldies.

Sophie St. Clair has been riding since the age of 7. She was trained throughout her Junior career by Caroline Sterckx and then later David Sterckx of Sterckx Stables. As a junior rider Sophie was twice invited to US Pony Finals, finished with multiple top placing in USEF’s Horse of the Year standings, she was a silver medalist in the Children’s Jumper Championships, she was selected to participate in the USHJA’s Emerging Athletes Program, she competed in the prestigious Longines Los Angeles Masters and placed in many Southern California Grand Prix’s. 

Sophie is a graduate of UC Berkeley with a Bachelor of Arts in Legal Studies and a Bachelor of Arts in Film. After college her attention has returned to what she loves, riding and now training the next generation of young champions.
